Child custody: Why what you wear to court matters

On Behalf of | May 6, 2020 | Uncategorized

Battling against an ex in a courtroom may be the last thing a parent wants when filing for divorce in New Jersey. After being warned that he or she is “in for a fight,” however, a concerned parent will try to be as prepared as possible for child custody proceedings. Good parents want what is best for their children, and if suing for sole custody to protect the interests of the kids is necessary, then most parents would be willing to do so.

While it may not be an issue that immediately comes to mind, what a parent wears to court may affect proceedings. It is understandable that, when requesting sole custody of children, a parent will want to make a good impression on the judge overseeing the case. There are several things to keep in mind when choosing one’s attire for the courtroom.

It is always best to have a neat and tidy appearance in court. This is especially true if the goal is to convince a judge that one is capable of providing proper care for children and that the children in question would be better off in the one’s sole custody. A sloppy or unclean appearance is not likely to win the court’s favor. A conservative, casual business style is typically the wisest choice.

There is not necessarily anything wrong with a parent having a flashy style or wearing makeup or trendy clothing when out with friends or at home. However, appearing in court to request sole child custody is not the appropriate place or time for self-expression of such nature. A judge takes many factors into consideration when making child custody decisions in a New jersey family court. While choosing attire for court is an important issue, it is merely one of many factors that may influence a court ruling. Any parent concerned about custody matters at this time may seek support by requesting consultation with an experienced family law attorney.
